How the samosa plays a vital role in the life of an Indian daily…

This ubiquitous snack has made a special place in the heart of every Indian. While preparations and tastes may differ from region to region, the warm fondness for this wonderful snack has made it a national as well as a global icon. I am talking of the samosa that has captured the hearts and tastes of every Indian on the go- literally.

Tracing its roots the word samosa comes from the Persian salted pastry delight ’Sambosag.’ The savory filling is usually vegetables like potatoes, peas, and cauliflower but also has non-vegetarian fillings like minced meat and fish with a dash of fiery spices and garnished generously with freshly chopped coriander.

The popular triangular shape given to the samosa is because the shape adds more depth and a good amount of veggies as well as the non-vegetarian filling can go inside the cone-shaped outer covering which is usually a wheat or Maida (refined wheat) based dough.

Now a wok filled with oil is heated on low flame and once the oil is quite hot these samosas are dropped and fried till golden brown and crisp. Served piping hot on a plate with a colourful dash of lip-smacking mint chutney that adds a flavorful twist to our otherwise mundane lives.
